Compulsory Basic Training – CBT
All new licence holders, must take a C.B.T, even for a moped.
You will need BOTH parts of your licence (photocard and paper counterpart) to be able to attend the course.
If you need to apply for a provisional licence you can do so online at www.direct.gov.uk/motoring or get an application form (D1) from the Post Office.
The C.B.T. course will take a whole day, although it might take less or more time as it depends on your ability.
The C.B.T Course Syllabus includes five elements that have to be completed:
- Element A – Introduction
- Element B – Practical on-site training
- Element C – Practical on-site riding
- Element D – Practical on-road training
- Element E – Practical on-road riding
You will only move on to the next element when your instructor is satisfied that you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level. When all five elements have been completed satisfactorily a Certificate of Completion D196 will be issued.
Once the CBT has been completed it is valid for two years and entitles you to ride a 50cc scooter from the age of 16 or a 125cc motorcycle from the age of 17. It allows you to ride unaccompanied with L-plates front and rear, but you cannot use a motorway or carry a pillion.
If you wish to take a CBT on a geared motorbike, you will ideally need to have some experience of riding a geared bike (i.e. be able to move off and sop safely and change gear) in order to be able to complete the CBT in the day.
